Hannah Warren
|
Hannah Warren was a child born without a trachea and was forced to live in a hospital and was unable to eat and breathe. In order to fix the problem the parents of Hannah Warren hired two doctors, one Italian doctor and one American pediatric surgeon from the Children's Hospital of Illinois. With regenerative medicine, these doctors used a plastic tube and cultivated the tube with Hannah’s stem cells. Once the cells encompassed the stem cell laced tube, the tube was surgically implanted in Hannah’s throat and was used as her trachea. Since it was made of her own cells, her body did not reject the trachea. Unfortunately, Hannah suffered from lung complications three months after receiving her windpipe and died. Despite her death, Hannah Warren is a pioneer to the field of medicine proving that stem cells can create regenerative medicines and puts humans one step closer to finding a cure to cancers and diabetes.
